Michelle Cobbin – Transitions
Thursday 24th September – Saturday 10th October 2020

We are delighted to welcome back painter Michelle Cobbin with a new exhibition of work created almost entirely during lockdown. Here Michelle explains her inspiration for this beautiful collection of paintings:

As for many, lockdown has been a time of withdrawal for me. I live on the edge of the South Downs, and that green chalky landscape has been my only stomping ground for daily walks and musings. I cope quite well with isolation – years of practice on meditation retreats has taught me how to be still and go inwards. The thought of painting seemed surreal – the simplicity of planting seeds in the garden, teaching yoga on Zoom and getting the daily walk was enough to contend with.

Upon reflection I see that things were percolating inside of me, as I questioned and reflected on the direction of my art practice. When I finally got back into the studio at the end of May, the colours came flowing out. Drawing inspiration from the wildflowers and the changing landscapes of the Downs, walks in isolation for weeks on end. These new paintings are a direct response to these walks, influenced by musings and reading on mythology of the soul.

The show is called ‘Transitions’ as that best describes where I feel I am right now: moving the paintings on; coming out of lockdown; dwelling amidst seasonal change;  embracing ageing and exploring ancestry.

The gallery will be open 11am – 5.30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday or by appointment. Sadly we are unable to hold a private view at this time but please follow us on Instagram to see interviews with Michelle, talking about her work and her creative process.
